Pet Owning Households in the U.S-The 2011-2012 Pet Owners Survey

In a time when U.S. households are stretching their own financial budgets like never before, many pet lovers recognize that the costs of pet ownership are still worth the return in companionship. The 2011-2012 Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) reveals the quantity of pet having households in the U.S. has arrived at an all-time high of 72.9 million, up 2.1% from the previous year.

64% of U.S. families own one or more pet, with at least one dog in 46.3 million homes and at least one cat in 38.9 million homes. Based to the survey, fish are following on the pet popularity list with 12.6 million families being fish owners. The number of bird, small mammal and reptile owning families were all documented at just over or under five million.

With 70% of dog owners and almost 60% of cat owners reporting they see their own pet as a member of the family or a kid, it’s no wonder the United states citizens are finding room in their costs to cover pet medications, supplies and other pet ownership expenses.
